World’s first 3D opera opens in Argentine cinemas

The first live opera performance to be turned into a 3D film opens today in a selected group of cinemas in Argentina, where the piece was shot and post-produced.
Both acts of L'elisir D'amore, a melodrama giocoso by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti, had been filmed in October 2010 during a live performance at the iconic Teatro Avenida in the city of Buenos Aires.
It is a co-production between two Argentine companies: film and television studio Astro Films and stereoscopic technology experts Full Dimensional Entertainment. The opera was recorded in Full 3D and features digital sound.
Described by film critique website Escribiendo Cine as "a unique cinematographic experience for opera lovers and the general public alike", the movie will be shown by Cinemark cinemas in the Buenos Aires neighborhoods of Palermo, Puerto Madero and Caballito; Showcase theatres in Belgrano and Norcenter; and Cinema City in La Plata.
The cast of the opera has Leonardo Pastore, Andrea Lucero Schor, Leonardo Estévez, Fernando Grassi and Laura Chisari as its main performers. Dante Ranieri was the music director.
